Physician Accountability
Medical errors are responsible for the deaths of 98,000 Americans each year. Patients trust their doctors to act responsibly and they trust state medical boards to hold their doctor accountable if they can’t maintain accepted standards of competence.
Thus, part of Public Citizen’s approach to enhancing patient safety is pushing states to better protect patients from doctors who are practicing medicine in a substandard manner.
We work toward enhanced accountability in the medical field by analyzing trends in state disciplinary actions across the U.S. and pushing for greater disclosure of disciplinary actions taken against doctors and other health care workers.
